Interview with IZW Superstar "High Risk" Joe Herell

“I see myself in IZW becoming a champion again.  Hopefully, one day, even becoming Heavyweight Champion.”

“High Risk” Joe Herell has been a top hand in the Oklahoma and surrounding territory for years.  Always known for his fast paced style, Herell is always a hot commodity for any organization to sign.  Recently, Herell has found himself back in his old stomping grounds, inside an IZW ring.  As one half of the tag team Aerial Assault, along with Dane Griffin, Herell has stormed into the division shaking up the status quo and giving fans from around the world another reason to tune into IZW every Saturday night on GFL.tv.

Along with the weekly platform provided by GFL.tv, Herell and all of the IZW Superstars can be viewed by 24 million households across the country on The Comcast Network and over half a dozen Comcast SportsNet regional networks.  For Herell, his return to Impact Zone Wrestling and getting the chance to partner with Griffin couldn’t have come at a better time in his career.

“IZW...... What an amazing company. They have so much to offer for the wrestlers and most importantly for the fans.  They have top notch talent and awesome storylines. And did I mention the production?  This is the best fed that I have possibly been to. The wrestlers look like wrestlers and not dressed in gym shorts, church shoes and kickpads. That tells a lot about a fed when everyone has different characters, styles and gear.  IZW having monthly iPPVs and airing on Comcast once a month is a huge deal because it allows for the wrestlers to be seen WORLDWIDE and that’s huge in this business.  The more you promote yourself, the more you get booked in other places and the better chance you have to make it to WWE or TNA perhaps.  In my opinion IZW is up there with TNA,” Herell said.

Herell, like most wrestlers working on the Independent scene, has had a long, grueling road to the top.  But for Herell, he has always been able to count on something not every wrestler has, and that’s his natural athleticism.

“Well I grew up in Ardmore, Oklahoma and went to school at Dickson High School. As far as I can remember back, I have always been a fan of wrestling, but it’s not what I’ve always wanted to do. I started playing football in about the fifth grade and I played all through high school and I wanted to try and get a scholarship to play in college.”

As fate would have it, Herell caught the wrestling bug during his teens.

“Well come my senior year in high school, right before football season started, I went to a really big show here in Ardmore. The show had names like Scott Steiner, Buff Bagwell, Jeff Jarrett, R-Truth and a few others. That’s where I met my trainer Al Santos and he had told me that he was starting a wrestling school right here in Ardmore.  After that show I got all of his info and the next day when I came up to help take the ring down I met the owner of IZW, Johnny Z.   He asked how old I was and if this was something I would like to do and I think that’s when I decided that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and that’s how I got started in the business,” Herell remembered.

Herell put his years of blood, sweat and tears on the gridiron to good use as he transferred over his skillset into the squared circle as he hit his newfound passion with the same resolve that made him such a highly respected football player.  “I started training right after football season so I was midway through my senior year. I trained with guys like Montego Seeka, Javi Hernandez, and my best friend and tag partner now, Dane Griffin. After about six months of training every day, I made my pro debut in March 2007.”

Since 2007, Herell has been progressing up the ranks of Independent wrestling and has incorporated his own personal family history and bloodlines into the equation along with his in ring work to help set himself apart from the crowd.  “I do have a nickname it’s KY-OTE everybody calls me that.  It was my debut name and I had that name for a good five years until I started to use my real name, Joe Herell.  I came up with my finisher after watching one of my favorite luchadores from Mexico LA PARKA. He calls his the ‘lucha bomb front-flip power bomb pin combo’ but I was thinking of a clever way to rename it. I thought to myself well I’m Indian Chickasaw and so I started calling it the Chickasaw bomb.”

“My goals in pro wrestling are of course make it to the WWE or TNA.   That’s pretty much everybody’s goal in wrestling. But I want to tour overseas and really get a lot of matches under my belt. I think experience is the key to make it and being successful in this business.  Being an Indy wrestler really isn’t a walk in the park. It’s hard for most guys to be really successful do to having to manage your wrestling time, your job during the week, and families. It’s harder than people expect. I’ve dislocated my shoulder three times. And the following Monday, I had to be at my job. That makes it hard to fully recuperate,” Herell stated.

But with great sacrifice comes great reward.  Herell’s work inside the ring has even taken him outside of the country where he has gotten a chance to rub shoulders with some of the sports all-time greats.  “The highlight of my career is when I did a one month tour in Puerto Rico where I did shows with the Great Muta, Scott Hall even Eddie Colon who is now Primo in WWE.  I wrestled three days a week for a month doing dark matches. It was a really good learning experience getting to talk to the old timers and legends like Carlos Colon,” Herell continued.

Longtime fans of Herell will know he is a two-time IZW World Tag Team Champion and will remember him in one of the hottest feuds in IZW history.  “My most memorable feud would most likely be when I was feuding with Randy Price over the fact that I’m an Indian.  He bribed me with firewater, a huge bottle of whiskey; we brawled in the parking lot, the locker room and finally ended the feud with an Indian Death Match which was my idea. It was a good feud and that match I think is pretty memorable for the IZW fans as well.”

As for what fans can look forward to in the present, Herell and his partner Griffin are close to reaching the pinnacle of tag team wrestling on the regional scene.  They are only one or two wins away from having another crack at the IZW World Tag Team Titles.

“February 16 is Violent Valentine, two days after my birthday. Yes, my birthday is on Valentine’s Day. Aerial Assault is ready and whoever our opponents are, they better bring their A-game because we are ready to be back on top as a premier tag team in IZW.”

Herell has always been a fan favorite and that feeling is reciprocated by “High Risk”.

“I just have to say to all the fans of IZW thank you for all of your support. I promise Aerial Assault will keep doing what we are doing. And remember when Aerial Assault is in the arena the ASSAULT STARTS NOW!!!!!”

Elite 1 MMA Unstoppable Review

Poster coming soon!

Elite 1 MMA returned to GFL.tv with Unstoppable from the Casino NB in New Brunswick, Canada. The amazing card was highlighted by a back and forth main event. Unstoppable packed the house with this 9-bout pro/am card, featuring 8 finishers.  The only way to watch this hard hitting, nonstop action event is to order it on GFL.tv.

In the main event, Matt MacGrath (12-8) defeated Mark Holst (11-5) in a welterweight shootout via unanimous decision.  MacGrath was originally scheduled to face Richard Arsenault (6-2) of Wellington in a title fight for Arsenault's Elite 1 MMA Welterweight Championship, but a late training injury (knee) to Arsenault squashed that bout. MacGrath proved he is the #1 Challenger in the Welterweight division as he outstruck and controlled the fight through most of the three rounds.  MacGrath is a strong grappler who likes to impose his ground game on opponents, but Holst was ready for MacGrath’s attacks and did not succumb to a submission although MacGrath looked for several throughout the fight, mostly from the bottom with arm locks, armbars and triangle chokes.  It was a solid showing by Holst who was a game fighter as a late replacement.

In other action, Dan Fowler (7-6) defeated Todd Westcott (0-4) in round one via arm triangle submission.  It was an overmatched fight that ended as no surprise.  The action hit the mat pretty quickly as Fowler got a take down.  From there Fowler worked in Westcott’s guard, transitioning to side control, all the while controlling Westcott’s head.  After gaining side control, Fowler cranked away on the choke until Westcott was unconscious.

Elite 1 MMA brings you a fully loaded card with Unstoppable. Watch the hottest Canadian prospects compete in the Elite 1 MMA cage. Order this event now, exclusively through the GFL Combat Sport Network at GFL.tv.

February 2 Preview for IZW on GFL.tv

Poster coming soon!

The war continues to wage as IZW inches closer and closer to Violent Valentine.  Last week more matches were added to the stacked iPPV on February 16 as Jordan “Lights Out” Jacobs will face O’Malley and in a Triple Threat Match for the IZW World Tag Team Championship, Team Remix (Cody Jones & Copycat) will defend against Big Business (Damon Windsor & Kevin Morgan) and The Old School Suckas (Randy Price & Bryan Cruize).

After last week’s crazy main event, in which Damien Morte came as close as anyone to ending Double D’s career, how will the Champ bounce back this week?  Double D has a lot on his plate as he has his sights set on The Convict, but with Morte’s actions last week it proves that if you are the Champ, anyone and everyone is gunning for you and your #1 spot.  Morte is ramping up his psychopathic tendencies leading up to his bout at Violent Valentine, where he will go one on one with Impact Division Champion Jermaine Johnson in a TLC Match.  Will the human crash test dummy still be in one piece by the time he gets his chance to regain the Impact Division Title or will he continue to raise the bar on what a human body can do and burn himself out before the match?

Last week also saw a shift in The Golden Trinity as “The Brass Bull” Bobby Starr continued to gain fan appreciation by his valiant effort in defeat against the massive Convict.  Starr even made the save for Double D at the end of the night when the aforementioned Morte had D dead to rights.  How will Starr, Venus and the leader of the Golden Trinity, “The Bronze Bull” Aaron Neil interact with one another this week?  Will Venus find some way to smooth everything over or has Starr finally seen the light and what is right there in front of him?  Lately, Neil has been on a mean streak a mile long and friend or foe better watch what they do and say around “The Bronze Bull”.  You can bet Madam Commissioner Erica will also be involved in this sordid and twisted love triangle and that will only complicate matters even more.

Be prepared for anything.  Expect the unexpected.  IZW is on the cutting edge of professional wrestling and fans around the world know that there’s nothing better going in wrestling than what happens every Saturday night at the Impact Arena in Lawton, Oklahoma.  If you are new to IZW, tune in this weekend and watch the trailblazing, hell raising, one of a kind promotion as IZW presents its latest masterpiece.

This is who we are! Nobody does it better! Watch all the feuds and all the rivalries inside and outside of the ring. January 26 Review of IZW on GFL.tv

Poster coming soon!

The January 26 edition of IZW TV upped the ante for all of the wrestlers in the locker room as the night proved that if you are not going to bring your A-game to the Impact Arena, you are not going to be able to survive.  Each feud heading into Violent Valentine on February 16 is reaching new, critical heights and only the strong will survive leading up to the most anticipated iPPV of early 2013.

In the first bout of the evening, The Convict took out his anger on “The Brass Bull” Bobby Starr who was accompanied by Venus.  Starr went after The Convict from the opening bell throwing everything at him but the kitchen sink, but to no avail as The Convict walked through all of Starr’s offense and manhandled Starr at will.  The fight went outside of the ring and that only increased the pain and suffering of Starr as Starr was thrown like a rag doll against the guardrail and then when getting in the middle of The Convict and Venus had his back and spine crushed against the ring post by The Convict.  Starr would not give up.  The action finally went back into the ring where Starr continued to fight back with such determination that the crowd even started to cheer for Starr because they could see a man fighting, clawing and scratching his way through a match where the odds were severely stacked against him.  Starr almost pulled off the upset of the century as he clobbered The Convict with his medal trophy in the face, but could only get a two-count as the King of the Yard would not stay down so easy.  The Convict shook off Starr’s comeback and hit his 15 to 20 finisher that put Starr’s lights out for good.

After the bout, The Convict went after Venus, but Starr was there to defend her honor and hit The Convict with a series of right hands before being clotheslined to the mat.  This spurred on Double D to come out to the ring and attack The Convict!  After about 20 elbows and a flying knee by Double D, The Convict was dropped to the mat in crushing fashion.  As The Convict gathered his thoughts and got back to his feet, Double D was tossed the Heavyweight Championship belt by Starr and D rammed the belt into The Convict’s head, once again sending the big man down to the mat.  In a final display of heroism, Double D hit a crossbody from the top rope on The Convict sending the challenger to Double D’s crown at Violent Valentine back down on his backside for the third time in a row!

After The Golden Trinity had a heated interview with Jordan Jacobs in The Lights Out Lounge, where Bobby Starr all but stuck his tail between his legs and proved once again he is the beta to “The Bronze Bull” Aaron Neil’s alpha, it was time for more in ring action.  In a terrific match, Impact Division Champion Jermaine Johnson defeated the pumped up Aaron Neil after a match that had both men battered and bruised when it was over.  This match had as much to do with the cracks in The Golden Trinity as anything else.  Neil started off fast and furious going after Johnson with punches, kicks, slams and anything else he could muster.  Johnson peeled off the top layer of Neil’s chest with devastating chops outside of the ring that had the whole crowd chanting “Woooooo” in honor of the king of knife edge chops, Ric Flair.  A spinebuster and spear later and Neil had once again gained control in the match.  Neil countered the J-Effect with a suplex that had the Impact Division Champion seeing stars.   In a twist of fate, Venus distracted the ref as Bobby Starr over shot Neil with the brass scepter having it fall directly into the hands of Johnson as he slammed it into Neil’s midsection like a big league slugger.  An ES2 later and Johnson defeated Neil in the middle of the ring 1-2-3.  Was this a case of miscommunication or was Starr getting retribution for his brow beating on The Lights Out Lounge?

In a battle of behemoths, “The Image of War” Kevin Morgan defeated O’Malley.  Morgan pushed O’Malley around the ring in the beginning tossing O’Malley around and dropping him with a big boot to the face.  The move was only topped by a running clothesline that almost separated O’Malley’s head from his shoulders.  Morgan then got into a shouting match with the crowd, which gave O’Malley time to regroup, highlighted by a bodyslam.  Morgan was able to thwart O’Malley’s future attacks having his way with O’Malley once again kicking him into a corner and trying to crush his throat by standing directly on O’Malley’s windpipe.  The 3-time IZW World Heavyweight Champion would not give up and after a running splash in the corner by O’Malley, Jordan Jacobs who was doing announcing duties with Big DA tried to run in to the ring to stop O’Malley’s momentum.  With the ref distracted by Jacobs, “The Big Picture” Damon Windsor came out to the ring and planted a forearm in the back of O’Malley’s skull.  Windsor and Morgan then gave O’Malley the Detonator from the second rope that ended the bout in explosive fashion.

In the main event, IZW World Heavyweight Champion Double D defeated Damien Morte via disqualification.  Morte rose to the occasion and had Double D in a few precarious spots throughout the bout including taking the fight to Double D on the outside of the ring and throwing the Champ’s body into the guardrails.  Morte hurt D with chops, overhand rights and chokes in the corner but D came back in his own right as he landed a series of knees to Morte’s face.  And enziguri kick by D also slowed down the deranged Morte, but that would not be enough to stop the human cannonball.  D proved he did his homework on his opponent as when Morte went up to the second rope to do his mock impression of Jermaine Johnson’s ES2 he was met with a knee to the mouth.  It was enough to make Morte finally snap as the first opportunity he got after this, Morte grabbed a chair from under the mat and cracked Double D in the forehead causing an immediate disqualification.  If that wasn’t enough, Morte leveled George Knight, the referee, as well.  Morte then brought in a ladder and table setting them up in the ring and gave Double D, his finisher, the knee-o-tine with Double D out cold, Morte hoisted D’s unresponsive body onto the table and climbed the ladder ready to permanently maim Double D.  These were the actions of a man who clearly doesn’t care about right and wrong anymore.  Bobby Starr ran down to the ring and went toe to toe with Morte giving Double D time to fall off of the table and out of harm’s way.  Morte executed another perfect knee-o-tine, this time on Starr.  With Morte looking to do more damage to Starr, Double D came out of nowhere and landed a flying knee to Morte’s head that knocked out Morte cold as the show went off the air!

January 26 Preview of IZW on GFL.tv

Poster coming soon!

The January 26 edition of IZW TV on GFL closes out the month of January for the hottest Independent wrestling organization in North America.  Last week saw a huge shake up in the tag team division as well as the Impact Division Champion and World Heavyweight Champion both losing in non-title bouts.  Things will only get more volatile as Violent Valentine is right around the corner on February 16 and you never know what will happen next at the Impact Arena.

Last week, new IZW World Tag Team Champions were crowned as Team Remix (Cody Jones & Copycat) defeated Randy Price in a Handicap Match to claim the titles.  Fans saw a different side of Jones and Copycat as they put winning ahead of good sportsmanship as the other member of the Old School Suckas, Bryan Cruize, was unable to make it to the arena.  Instead of rescheduling the match, Team Remix did what was in their right and had the two on one match against Price and won the titles, but at what cost?  Jones and Copycat have always been fan favorites and that all went down the drain after last week.  The tag team division might be the wildest division in IZW as along with the new champions, you have Big Business eyeing another title match in hopes to get their belts back, Aerial Assault which is making waves and of course the former champs the OSS which once they regroup will be on a mission to take out Team Remix.

Jermaine Johnson saw firsthand last week that he can’t only be thinking about his future opponent at Violent Valentine, Damien Morte, as he suffered a defeat losing clean in the middle of the ring to one of IZW’s rising stars, Chad Thomas.  Thomas hit Johnson with a discus lariat that almost decapitated the Impact Division Champion.  Could all of Johnson’s Impact Rules Matches be taking a toll on the Leader of the Hype Section?  Things are only going to get more brutal for Johnson as he and Morte will be competing in a TLC Match at Violent Valentine.  And now with other challengers to the throne, Johnson will have to keep his head on a swivel to make sure he doesn’t take another shot like he took last week from Thomas.

Finally, last week the IZW World Heavyweight Champion Double D suffered a loss to “Mr. Nasty” Robert Lee, but what will have longer effects on D’s psyche is the aftermath of the bout, where The Convict came down to the ring and decimated Double D ending with The Convict’s finisher, The 15 to 20.  Double D has overcome stacked odds before, but The Convict is a different kind of animal, a total savage of a man, if you can even call him that.  Look for Double D to bounce back this weekend and come at The Convict with all the piss and vinegar he can muster.  But will it be enough?  More importantly, will it be enough at Violent Valentine when D’s World Championship is on the line?

This is who we are! Nobody does it better! Watch all the feuds and all the rivalries inside and outside of the ring. Tune in to the Southwest's premiere wrestling federation and find out what will happen next. Watch professional wrestling like it's supposed to be, rough and tumble and always in HD at GFL.tv.

Rocktagon MMA XXIII – Warriors, Raise Your Shields Review

Poster coming soon!

One of the country's premier national cage fighting events returned as Rocktagon MMA presented Rocktagon MMA XXIII – Warriors, Raise Your Shields at the La Villa Event Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Rocktagon MMA has been on a rampage since its launch in 2010 having promoted more than 20 shows showcasing the rising pro and amateur fighters from around the Midwest, West Coast and East Coast. With 10 finishes in 13 total bouts Rocktagon MMA XXIII – Warriors, Raise Your Shields is definitely must-see TV for MMA fans that like fast paced, action-packed, evenly matched fights.

In the main event, Cody Stevens (9-9) and Cory “The Irish Car Bomb” Mahon (9-5) fought to a draw after three rounds in an epic back and forth bout in the featherweight division.  After the bout both men looked like they went to hell and back, because they did.  Both gladiators had swollen and bruised faces including black eyes and cuts everywhere.   The warriors went after each other right from the opening bell, with Mahon landing the crisper, cleaner punches in the opening round.  Mahon took the center of the cage and was the aggressor walking Stevens back, while Stevens tried to pivot and counter with big overhands when he could.  Mahon also mixed up the striking by landing some leg kicks to Steven’s thighs, keeping the bigger Stevens off balance a bit in the opening stanza.  In round two, Mahon landed a nice head kick that hurt Stevens, but Stevens did the smart thing and pulled guard bring the fight to the mat and giving him a minute to clear his head.  Stevens mostly stymied Mahon’s attacks from the top and managed to land a few nice elbows to Mahon’s head from the bottom.  Later in the round, Stevens went for a variation of a shoulder lock-armbar submission on Mahon but Mahon fought out and during a scramble both men were fighting for position and Stevens landed an upkick to Mahon’s face while Mahon was on the ground, an illegal strike.  A point was deducted from Stevens and Mahon took a couple minutes to gather his thoughts and then they were right back into the swing of things like nothing ever happened.  Stevens landed a takedown shortly after and probably won the round with that final move, but it would be scored even, because of the point deduction.  In round three, Stevens had the better showing as he was able to get Mahon to the mat and use his wrestling to control Mahon on the mat.  Both men continued to look for submission to end the fight, but it went to the judges after 3 rounds of absolute balls to the wall action.  Even though neither man got the victory, both deserve to be commended for their effort as you won’t find many better main events than this.

In the co-main event, Bellator veteran Anthony “The Recipe” Lapsley (22-5) made short work of Gerald “The Machine” Meerschaert (15-6) as Lapsley slapped on a rear naked choke in round one to get the tapout in a bout contested at 175 lb.  The southpaw Lapsley started off by throwing a few jabs and some overhand lefts looking to close the distance on Meerschaert.  But it was Meerschaert who connected with a counter left hand of his own, but Lapsley got the distance he wanted and landed a double leg takedown on Meerschaert while quickly moving to side control.  Meerschaert tried to roll out of the position, but in doing so gave his back to Lapsley who took advantage of the situation and sunk in a figure-four with his legs around Meerschaert’s torso making it almost impossible for Meerschaert to free himself.  But Meerschaert did just that, freeing himself, but after a quick scramble on the ground, Lapsley regained control of Meerschaert’s back and sunk in the choke for good this time, getting the tapout win.   It was a solid victory for Lapsley over a strong fighter in Meerschaert and only adds to Rocktagon’s growing Pro Series by bringing in such top quality fighters.

Rocktagon MMA XXIII – Warriors, Raise Your Shields provided the same quality entertainment that every Rocktagon MMA event offers which is competitive, well matched MMA fights in front of a packed, enthusiastic crowd. Xtreme Combat - Pains in the Nek Review

Poster coming soon!

Xtreme Combat made its successful debut as it presented Pains in the Nek a 12-bout pro/am card emanating from St. Johnsbury, Vermont. This event featured the top up and combing prospects inside the New England area. Xtreme Combat proved it is the premier MMA organization in the Green Mountain State with a solid card highlighted by a main event and co-main event that were hard fought close contests.

In the main event, Taylor Trahan (2-0) from Vermont defeated Jamir Toledo (1-1) via split decision after a 3 round war in the professional ranks.  It was a close fight but in round 3, Trahan showed that he deserved the win by taking Toledo down and keeping him there for most of the round.  From the mat, Trahan displayed a great ground game going for submissions as well as landing several strikes to Toledo and not allowing Toledo to mount a comeback.  It was a solid win for Trahan who has now won 5 in a row (including amateur fights) and showed that he is a rising fighter in the New England area.  Toledo did a great job in his own right and withstood Trahan’s multiple and varied submission attacks throughout the bout where others might have gotten caught and tapped, Toledo fought on and deserves credit for that.

In the co-main event, Brett Trahan (6-2) defeated Domenic Ruccolo (3-1) via split decision in another close fight to win the Amateur Welterweight Title after 5 rounds. Trahan was usually the aggressor on the bout especially in the fifth and final round as he tried to set up several chokes to catch Ruccolo.  But Ruccolo had scouted Trahan well and fought out of every bad position and had Trahan in a few compromising spots as well.  A chess match on the ground at times, Ruccolo liked to keep top position and control while Trahan worked from the bottom going for submissions.  This bout was a bit closer than the main event, and maybe the promoters of Xtreme Combat will see fit to have a rematch which should be a barnburner just like this one.

You won't find more BANG for your buck so order this thrilling event. Be sure to catch all of the action now as Xtreme Combat presents Pains in the Nek including a championship bout in the welterweight division on pay-per-view exclusively at GFL.tv.

This event did not have commentators.
